Why Are Flip-Flops Bad for Your Feet?

As the spring and summer months begin and bring warm weather with them, you may feel tempted to wear a pair of flip-flops. While these shoes are easy to slip on, they also make it easier to slip, leading to potential foot and ankle injuries. Furthermore, wearing flip-flops often can make you alter your gait or walking pattern. When you wear flip-flops, you tend to point your ankles inwards and curl your toes to keep the shoes on your feet. This unnatural walking pattern can lead to all sorts of foot problems, from hammertoes to heel spurs. Flip-flops also offer no arch support, which can lead to arch pain and plantar fasciitis. When the weather is warm, opt instead for sandals with heel straps, which will keep your foot in place. For more information about avoiding foot and ankle problems caused by footwear, please consult with a podiatrist.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Jill Einhorn, DPM and James Einhorn, DPM. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

What Is Idiopathic Peripheral Neuropathy

Idiopathic peripheral neuropathy refers to damage of the peripheral nerves where cause can not be determined. When the peripheral nerves are damaged, there are often symptoms that affect the feet. These can include numbness, a tingling or burning sensation, pain, a loss of sensation, muscle weakness, muscle spasms, or difficulty moving the lower limbs. Treatment for idiopathic peripheral neuropathy that affects the lower limbs focuses on managing the symptoms of the disease. Certain medications or physical therapy may be suggested. Mobility aids, such as orthotic shoes, canes, or braces may be prescribed to help you balance and walk. For more information about peripheral neuropathy, please consult with a podiatrist.

When dealing with systemic disease of the feet, it is extremely important to check the affected areas routinely so that any additional problems are caught quickly.  If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles contact one of our podiatrists from Jill Einhorn, DPM and James Einhorn, DPM. Our doctors will assist you with all of your podiatric needs.

Systemic Diseases of the Feet

Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable.  Systemic diseases include gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.

Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs to relieve pain and inflammation, and other drugs that lower the acid levels in the body.

Diabetes mellitus – is an increase in the level of blood sugar that the body cannot counteract with its own insulin. Failure to produce enough insulin is a factor in Diabetes.

Diabetes of the Feet

Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.

Peripheral Vascular Disease – can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Brooklyn and Astoria, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Wearing High Heels With Bunions

Bunions, bony bumps on the sides of the feet that often form at the big toe joint, can cause pain or discomfort. This problem is exacerbated by wearing shoes that have excessively high heels, pointed toes, or a fit that is too tight. While you don’t have to give up high heels forever, if you have a bunion, it is recommended that you make changes when it comes to the type of heels you wear and how frequently you wear them. When picking out your shoes, opt for those with a heel no higher than two inches. You should also look for wider shoes that have built-in support and cushioning. Rather than wearing high heels daily, it is recommended that you give your feet a break often, by resting the feet, wearing flats, and doing foot stretches regularly. For more information about bunions, or if you have painful bunions, please consult with a podiatrist.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact one of our podiatrists of Jill Einhorn, DPM and James Einhorn, DPM. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Brooklyn and Astoria, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

How Footwear Can Lead to Hammertoes

Did you know that the shoes you wear can put you at higher risk of developing a hammertoe? Hammertoes occur when a toe’s middle joint becomes set in an abnormally bent position, rather than pointing forward. Millions of people in America are afflicted with this condition which can be very embarrassing and painful. Although genetics, injuries or arthritis can play a part, there are ways to help avoid developing hammertoes. Don’t wear shoes that are too narrow, tight, pointy or that otherwise force your toes into bent or unnatural positions. Stretch out your toes and elevate your feet as much as possible and take care of bunions, corns, and calluses. If you are already suffering from hammertoe, a podiatrist can help you determine the best course of action for correcting it.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Jill Einhorn, DPM and James Einhorn, DPM. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

If you have any questions please contact our offices located in Brooklyn and Astoria, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Symptoms of Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Chronic venous insufficiency is a condition that affects the circulatory system that is characterized by the leg veins not functioning properly.  This leads to blood pooling in the legs instead of being pumped back up to the heart. While it is not a serious threat to your overall health, chronic venous insufficiency can be painful and interfere with your daily life. Symptoms of this condition can include swelling in the legs and ankles, a tight feeling in the calves, leg pain, skin discoloration near the ankles, varicose veins, leg ulcers, and painful muscle cramps or spasms. Chronic venous insufficiency is more likely to occur in those who are overweight, pregnant, have a family history of this condition, or have a history of previous leg damage due to injuries, surgery, or blood clots. If you believe that you are suffering from Chronic Venous Insufficiency or you want to learn more about chronic venous insufficiency, please consult with a podiatrist.

Poor circulation is a serious condition and needs immediate medical attention. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of Jill Einhorn, DPM and James Einhorn, DPM. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.
